History and Heritage

The Russian Fort constructed in 1816 is the last of its kind currently preserved as Russian Fort Elizabeth State Historical Park. Along with being a fabulous place for sightseeing, it is also the site for archaeological and anthropological field survey. The Hickam Field, now part of the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam is an old Air Force Base which was one of the primary targets of the Imperial Japanese Navy during the WWII Pacific Campaign.

Other historical sites include the ‘Iolani Palace which is the only royal palace used by a reigning monarch in the US. It was the residence of King Kalākaua until 1893 when the monarchy was overthrown. Captain James Cook who was famous for being the first European to set foot on many Pacific destinations also set foot for the first time in Hawaii in 1778. The Cook Landing Site has since become a historical monument for the state.

Wildlife enthusiasts should head for the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge to spot native Hawaiian seabirds and Nene - the endangered Hawaiian goose, red-footed boobies, Laysan albatrosses, wedge-tailed shearwaters, and other seabirds. Further the Marine Sanctuary waters that surround the refuge are home to the Hawaiian monk seals, green sea turtles and, during the winter, humpback whales. You can also spot spinner dolphins here. The Keahiakawelo, situated on the island of Lanai is also known as the Garden of the Gods. The surprising aspect of this garden is that it is not made up of vegetation. Instead it comprises of stunning rock formations formed by millions of years of erosion.

Drive your rentals on Oahu, to reach the Lanikai Beach. The pristine clean waters with its white sandy beach and swaying coconut palms serves as an idyllic picturesque backdrop for the perfect day out in the sun. This is considered as the best beach for swimming in Hawaii. Oahu is also home to the Hanauma Bay that was formed by a huge volcanic crater thousands of years ago. Waterfalls and mist covered green topped mountains of the beautiful Hanalei beach is a breath taking sight to behold. The bay is also known for its large coral reefs. The place is also popular with surfers. Kapalua Bay Beach in Maui is known for its serene waters, golden sand and swaying palm trees. The tranquil waters make it an ideal beach for kids.

Water sports

The Island of Maui is an excellent place to participate in a wide variety of wind-powered water sports including kite surfing which is most extreme and exhilarating. Molokini in Maui is also a popular destination for snorkeling enthusiasts due to its clear waters and abundant marine life.
